Enjoying the flowers at Melville Koppies

Come and explore the Melville Koppies.

Most people visiting Melville Koppies are not botanists or flower enthusiasts. That doesn’t mean to say that the Koppies doesn’t have its share of enticing botanical treasures that you won’t find in a normal garden.

If you go very soon you’ll just see the tail end of the pineapple flower (Eucomis autumnalis) before its leaves and flower head die back and disappear only to appear again in spring. Hiding underground is a giant bulb that stores its nutrients for the cold winter.

Or you might still spot the ground orchid (Bonatea antennifera) which only releases its strong fragrance at night when its pollinators, the hawkmoths abound. Ask the guides at the gate where you’re likely to find these botanical delights.

Remember all plants on the Koppies are protected and are not allowed to be removed.
