Giving back a priority for Avenues artist

“When I get older I want to be able to look back at my career and be able to say I was not a selfish artist and that I didn’t just do things for me.”

Since the NEWS last spoke to Katleho “Kvy Tee” Moabi in July last year, the artist kickstarted his journey to work with others in hopes of helping to grow their creatives.

The Avenues resident and musician hopes to work with established and up-and-coming creatives to establish a group of likeminded people who work together.

“In the normal world, everyone just takes; among musicians and artists its worse, and I want to try change that,” said Katleho.

He explained that some artists, not all, can be selfish and only think of themselves when they are signed to a record label or make a name for themselves.

One example of how he did this was working with the CEO of Klerksdorp-based clothing line Snack Wear, Koketso Makutle.

Originally from Klerksdorp, Katleho immediately liked the style of Snack Wear. “When I first approached Koketso there were hesitations about putting my name on the clothes, which I understood,” said Katleho.

However, Katleho proved he was the name to choose and not long after suggesting the idea he and Koketso formed a partnership.

“It is all about helping another person grow and working together,” said Katleho. Besides creating partnerships, Katleho hopes to take his record label, Galaxy Records, and create something similar to a mentorship programme.
In the future, he hopes to use the label as a platform for aspiring singers, songwriters and anyone who wants to learn more about the entertainment industry.

“I would rather be good at teaching and giving back to the industry than be known as holding people back,” said Katleho. “I would love for people to be taught and mentored to a point where they are independent enough to choose to either leave the label and go on their own or stay.”

Speaking about his musical achievements, Katleho said he was directing a music video for one of his tracks and had released a two-track extended-play several weeks ago.

The album titled Sayfar – 18 pays homage to SayFar, a Soweto entertainer Katleho met and worked alongside in 2018.

“I always told SayFar he was going to go far and now he is signed with The Effect, a label which works with names like AKA,” said Katleho.

“When I get older I want to be able to look back at my career and say I was not a selfish artist and that I didn’t just do things for me.”

Advising aspiring creatives and those wanting to break into the entertainment industry, Katleho said the following:

• Everyone is a potential sponsor

“You need to find what connects you and the person whom you are trying to get help from. You need to be honest with them and convince them that you and what you are doing is worth their effort.”

• Do your research

“When you are looking at what to do next research what the next step is or if you are trying to find out how to contact somebody make sure you make the right connections.”

• Song ideas

“Songs start from ideas that hit you, a song that has the best meaning to it is a song that stirs up a memory or a feeling and makes you say wow.”
