Miss Edenvale lends a helping hand to those in need

“It's never too late to start helping those around you, even donating a sandwich to a person on the side of the road is a start.”

Kelly Winter, reigning Miss Edenvale, paid a visit to Krugersdorp to help those affected by recent flooding.
Kelly, the ambassador of the Role Models Foundation, said the foundation stepped in after another member noticed the need for donations.

“I personally didn’t have a chance to meet any of the flood victims themselves as the donations were delivered to a home where they would be sorted and distributed,” said Kelly.

“The person distributing the donations described it as a very sad situation and said the flood victims lost everything in their houses.”

Kelly said the group was able to help the community members by providing them with food, clothes, sanitary items, cleaning supplies and toiletries.

Miss Edenvale said although seven members of the foundation were involved in assisting the flood victims, she runs her own initiatives.

She for example collects textbooks, old or new, to start a library at an underprivileged school.

“Helping those in need is always quite emotional for me as I have so much and they have nothing. I wish that there was more I could do for those in need,” said Kelly.

“However, at the same time, there is no feeling that compares to the joy I get in seeing the smiles and gratitude on the faces of those that I have helped.”

Over the past 13 years, Kelly has actively pursued helping others. She often donates clothes, toys and food to various organisations such as Little Eden and children’s homes. She also regularly visits the Edenvale Hospital.

“I have participated in many events. This includes walks for cancer, organ donor drives, the Mamba toy run, blanket drives, blood donations, handed out awareness ribbons for Aids and cancer, participated in fashion show fund-raisers and helped out at Cupcakes for Hope to name a few.”

Kelly said she’s always been a helpful person. “I have been involved in community services with the help of my mom, Joan Winter, and modelling coach, Jackie Allen, since about the age of eight,” explained Kelly.

“We would always do regular visits to the Edenvale Hospital and hand out sweets and toys to the patients. I also participated in a Mandela blanket drive for Jacaranda FM at the age of 10.”

To those considering helping others and getting involved in volunteer projects, Kelly advised, “It’s never too late to start helping those around you, even donating a sandwich to a person on the side of the road is a start.

“There are various charities in every suburb that are always looking for donations and assistance.”

She added that social media is always a good place to start looking for particular organisations to support.

“I am also on social media. Community members can ask for advice anytime.”
