SAPS share festive season do’s and don’ts

If community members find themselves threatened by a criminal it is important to remain calm and not make sudden gestures.

With the festive season here Edenvale SAPS provided several tips in the hopes of keeping shoppers safe this December.

Edenvale SAPS spokesperson Sgt Jacob Mashile said with the holiday season upon us the community needs to exercise caution and be vigilant.

“Community members should install the MySAPS from the Apple or Google Play Store or dial *134*10111 when there is an emergency,” said Mashile.

• Don’t ask for help from strangers at ATMs.

• Don’t display money in public.

• Don’t ask for directions from strangers, instead ask from law enforcement agents or the information centre.

• Don’t buy anything from a salesman at the door, outside the shop.

• Keep your personal belongings such as wallets and handbags safe.

• Always observe your surroundings.

Tips to prevent hijackings

• Avoid being alone in a vehicle when travelling at night.

• Do not stop in a secluded area.

• Always be alert when driving, if you suspect you are being followed go to the nearest police station.

• Don’t pick up hitchhikers, particularly when you drive alone.

• Avoid distractions such as being on your phone or drinking and driving

• Be alert at intersections.

Tips to avoid contact crimes

• Don’t carry large sums of money.

• Do not carry a weapon when attending a social gathering.

• Avoid confrontations when under the influence of alcohol.

• Do not leave your drink unattended.

Mashile said if community members find themselves threatened by a criminal it is important to remain calm and not make sudden gestures.

“Avoid eye contact but try to remember what the perpetrator looks like by identifying and remembering features like scars, tattoos and piercings.”

Mashile said community members should try to get away safely from the area but not to risk their lives or put themselves in danger.
