Karaglen and NEWS team up to help families in need

Karacares, the community relief initiative was first launched during South Africa’s hard lockdown and with the help of sponsors and donors, the initiative helped organisations provide the support struggling families need.

It’s Christmas time but unlike other years, many families will not have a little extra to bring festive cheer into their homes.

Bedfordview and Edenvale NEWS and Karaglen SuperSpar have therefore once again partnered to provide struggling Edenvale families in the Karaglen footprint with essential food parcels.

Karacares, the community relief initiative, was first launched during South Africa’s hard lockdown and with the help of sponsors and donors, the initiative helped organisations provide the support struggling families need.

“As community members we all have a responsibility to help our neighbours through these very trying times,” said Karaglen director Harry Karamichael.

He added that the tough times as a result of the pandemic greatly impacted families in the community.

“It’s hard to see and we want to make sure that struggling families have a meal on Christmas day,” he said.

NEWS Editor Marietta Lombard said it is at this time of the year when those in need require the most support.

“We are proud to once again join hands with Karaglen SuperSpar to spread a little festive cheer and hopefully feed a few families,” she said.

During levels 5, 4 and 3 of the national lockdown the Karacares distributed over 300 essential food parcels to struggling families in Edenvale.

Residents and businesses can help support Karacares in the following ways:

• Businesses can sponsor a family for R300 either in-store at Karaglen SuperSpar or online.

• Residents can make a donation of R300 to cover the cost of a food parcel with their next purchase at Karaglen SuperSpar, either in-store or online through the Order-Collect-Pay service offered by Karaglen SuperSpar.

• Residents can also make donations of R20 or more in-store or online.

The initiative is aimed at supporting organisations registered with Karacares that are already working in the community.
