Manuel attributes his award-winning pavement to the many hours of hard work he and his gardener Kennith put in. The jewel of his pavement garden is an 800-year-old Cycad.

Manuel said that he plans to give his first prize of a one night’s stay for two with breakfast at The Giglio Boutique Hotel in Bedfordview to Kennith to thank him for all his hard work.

“I’m so surprised. I really didn’t expect this at all,” he said.

Manuel told the NEWS that he finds working in his garden to be relaxing.

Manuel Sardinha, winner of the best pavement in Bedfordview, receives his prize from RAG chairperson Marina Constas and Bedfordview ward councillor Jill Humphreys.

In August RAG set out to find Bedfordview’s best pavements under the Better Bedfordview initiative. The judging was conducted by Bedfordview ward councillor, Jill Humphreys, Wayne Stewart from Eckards Garden Pavilion and Enrico Catinella from Grounds Care Services.

Caron Hosking from Essexwold walked away with the second-place prize of a consultation and teeth whitening kit worth R2 000 from Dr Yak Lindy Dental Care.

Better Bedfordview is a RAG initiative which relies on the support of the community. With the support of the community Better Bedfordview can tackle more clean-ups, drive more community improvement projects, and expand its team of cleaners to create more employment opportunities.

Residents can donate to Better Bedfordview by visiting www.bedfordviewrag.co.za/donations/ or call RAG on 011 455 4120.
