UPDATE: Investigation into learners’ altercation continues

According to Lesufi, it was believed the altercation was sparked by R25 that was owed to another learner.

No arrests have been made as police continue to investigate a case of assault following a fight among Edenglen High School learners which occurred on the streets of Edenglen.

Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Capt Kay Makhubela said a case of assault was opened by one of the victims of the fight and is under investigation.

The fight, which occurred on November 10, attracted the attention of Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi after a video of the fight surfaced on social media.

Lesufi visited the school on November 11 and met with representatives of the school’s leadership and community stakeholders to learn how the school was handling the matter.

According to Lesufi, it was believed the altercation was sparked by R25 that was owed to another learner.

“The violence which erupted outside the school premises involved about 10 learners,” said MEC spokesperson Steve Mabona.

“It was revealed that some learners in the fight are not registered with the school. An investigation to identify them is underway.”

According to Stratton, the fight occurred approximately a kilometre away from the school.

He said the management of the school was upset by this incident.
