Community gets involved to make a difference

In the hopes of creating a cleaner and safer environment, Edenvale City Improvement District (ECID) partnered with residents and businesses to clean up Edenvale.

In the hopes of creating a cleaner and safer environment, Edenvale City Improvement District (ECID) partnered with residents and businesses to clean up Edenvale.

The group of volunteers of all ages came together on October 31 near the corner of Sixth Avenue and Mynhardt Street.

Manager of ECID, Linda McKenzie, said the idea to hold the clean up project was formed at the organisation’s October board meeting when Marc de Sousa of Build It raised the point.

“After speaking about the state of the area, we opened the project to community members and businesses to get involved,” said Linda.

She said several businesses from across Edenvale, security companies, the Lions Basketball Academy, AfriForum and community members alike joined in.

“Besides cleaning up, the day allowed community members to work together and to know each other a bit better.”

Linda said in the two days leading up to the clean-up, workers from the City of Ekurhuleni’s Parks Department assisted by cutting down some of the dense brush in the area in question.

She said this and the front-end loader organised by Marc assisted the volunteers.

Looking to the future, Linda said ECID hopes to host clean-ups such as these regularly.

She said the project would like to see all open areas along Mynhardt Street between Van Riebeek and First avenues cleared by the end of the year.

Linda said one of the biggest concerns for residents and businesses is the vagrants. She said on the day of the clean-up some vagrants along the water’s edge did not want to leave.

Linda said the assistance of a security company was required to relocate the individuals.
