Humphreys delighted as action is taken for Gillooly’s billboard

According to City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe, the owners of the structure were recently charged for contravention of Ekurhuleni’s outdoor advertising by-laws.

Bedfordview ward councillor Jill Humphreys said she is delighted that headway was made in the removal of the Gillooly’s Farm billboard.

In the October 14 edition of the NEWS it was reported the owners of the massive billboard at Gillooly’s Farm would appear in the Johannesburg High Court soon.

According to City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe, the owners of the structure were recently charged for contravention of Ekurhuleni’s outdoor advertising by-laws.

“If found guilty the owners of this billboard could face a fine or imprisonment and the forfeiture of all revenue generated from the billboard.”

Gadebe said the billboard was installed without the necessary approval from the City in 2016 and that the City could have potentially suffered revenue losses as a result of unapproved advertisements.

He said in addition to this, illegal advertising structures also pose a danger to motorists, pedestrians and properties around them.

“That this billboard was allowed to be erected in the first place is a travesty of justice,” Humphreys said.

She added that as the billboard was going up, councillor Heather Hart and herself worked to expose the non-compliance.

“I’m delighted that our legal and corporate department has at last made enough headway in the four-year court battle,” she said.

“I only hope the High Court action takes it down for good.”
