Abandoned cats a concern for Edenvale SPCA

After several cats were brought into the care of Edenvale SPCA the branch urged community members to take greater care of their feline friends.

After several cats were brought into the care of Edenvale SPCA the branch urged community members to take greater care of their feline friends.

Inspector Jade Nel said between July 1 and 21 five stray cats were found throughout Edenvale.

“Some of the cats were found on the road, emaciated, dehydrated, almost unresponsive, unsterilised and some had green discharge in the eyes and nose. There was also a case of a broken pelvis.”

Nel said each cat’s vet bill costs the SPCA just over R1 000 because the society has an obligation to help stray animals.

“These cats were strays, their owners never came looking,” said Nel.

“We can only assume people are moving and abandoned them.”

Nel appealed to the community to not leave their cats behind.

“Surrender them to your local SPCA, take them to your own vet and put them to sleep if they are old and don’t stand a chance in a new home.

“Don’t leave them. These are your animals, your responsibility and you as an owner should man up and do what’s best for your pet.”

Nel thanked the community members who either brought them in or notified the branch.

Although the branch set out to assist as many of the strays as possible some of them lost the fight.

“Please make sure your animals are in your plans to move, even if it means surrendering them to your local SPCA.”
