Bishop Bavin School learners, teachers and parents and others affected by the school’s closure protested for the second time outside the Anglican Diocese of Johannesburg offices on June 26.

According to teacher Odette Jones, more than 150 unemployed staff, hundreds of learners and parents have nowhere to go.

Jones said teachers, parents and learners staged the first peaceful protest outside the school on June 19.

“A week later after the first peaceful protest, the termination letters are still not valid for any UIF collections,” Jones alleged.

“The second protest was held in an attempt to get answers and for justice to prevail.”

She said all protesters adhere to all Covid-19 regulations.

“Learners, parents and teachers have taken to various social media platforms to air their shock. The Bishop of the Anglican Church made a public announcement to all the stakeholders that the school would continue to run as normal after firing the school’s sitting board, only to announce closure of the school,” she said.

“Parents and learners have been left reeling and adding insult to injury, the school was closed within a week without giving parents enough time to collect books and stationery or get necessary transfer papers. Parents have been left without the possibility of getting refunds on prepaid fees,” said Jones.

“The call to the Diocese has resulted in more questions than answers.”
