Youth empowerment programmes announced by CoJ

The seven best videos will receive MTN Foundation-sponsored tablets as a prize.

On June 22, the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) issued a statement to inform residents of its numerous youth empowerment programmes, despite the challenges that the country faces in dealing with Covid-19 epidemic.

According to the City, over 33.2 per cent of the population in Johannesburg consists of young people between the ages of 14 and 35 years old.

“Young people are migrating to Johannesburg for better opportunities,” stated the City.

This influx of young people presents CoJ with a challenge of how to ensure that the youth are productive and active members of society.
The following programmes were initiated to keep the youth actively involved as members of the society:

Teach Senior Citizen Skills – Youth Video Competition
As part of June’s Youth Month celebrations, to promote digital inclusion, the City of Johannesburg Library Services eLearning unit is running a competition for all youth from ages 15 to 35.
The youth will participate by creating and submitting short videos demonstrating how they have taught their parent, grandparent or senior relative how to use technology such as tablets, smartphones, computers and so forth, for various purposes, such as reading, doing online transactions, socialising, or surfing the internet.
The seven best videos will receive MTN Foundation-sponsored tablets as a prize.
The competition runs until June 25, 2020.

Joburg City Theatres’ performances during Youth Month
Joburg City Theatres will be streaming the most engaging and relevant shows, prudently crafted by the Youth and Community Development Programme on their YouTube page.
The youth month programme will present plays, stand-up comedy, poetry, and music from June 11 to June 28 in partnership with the National School of The Arts (NSA), Art24, Indie Music and many more young artists.
All the shows will be streamed on the Joburg Theatre’s YouTube page.

During June, the City of Johannesburg’s Twitter account is running an initiative to promote youth-owned businesses under the hashtag #JoburgYouthBiz.
The initiative has had huge traction and has received hundreds of tags and thousands of retweets.
