Taxi driver arrested for robbery and kidnapping in Meadowdale

"As officers were issuing a fine, a disturbed and almost out of breath pedestrian came running towards the officers and requested them to arrest the driver because he had ferried the quartet, who had robbed him inside the taxi and left him stranded, on the N12 freeway."

A father (42) who took a taxi from Modderfontein to buy winter clothes for this children was held up and robbed on May 26 by five occupants, which included the driver of a taxi.

“The man wanted to go to Johannesburg to buy winter clothes. As the minibus was in motion, the passengers pointed a firearm at the man.

“They took R2 050 in cash, his cellphone, a bank card and they demanded his PIN. The traumatised man was dropped off on the N12 freeway direction east at Harper bridge in the Bedfordview area,” said EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng.

Mokheseng said at about 12.25pm, members of the EMPD Drunk Driving Enforcement Unit, deployed on freeways, noticed a white Toyota Quantum minibus taxi quickly dropping off four male commuters on the N12 freeway.

“This is prohibited and the taxi driver was stopped on the N12 direction east at Germiston on-ramp in Meadowdale area, just opposite Sunnyrock. They stopped him to issue a citation for stopping on the freeway.

“As officers were issuing a fine, a disturbed and almost out of breath pedestrian came running towards the officers and requested them to arrest the driver because he had ferried the quartet, who had robbed him inside the taxi and left him stranded, on the N12 freeway,” said Mokheseng.

“The 25-year old taxi driver was arrested and faces charges of armed robbery and kidnapping. He was taken to Bedfordview Police Station.

“The 42-year-old father was treated for shock.”
