Businesses should take more precaution when transporting goods

"Businesses should make sure they know exactly when stock is being delivered or when they are delivering stock in order to take precautions,"

Following a shoot-out involving a security escort and a delivery vehicle transporting goods in Bedfordview on May 19, Bedfordview SAPS urged businesses to remain observant at all times.

Capt André de Jager, Bedfordview SAPS spokesperson, said the incident included a case of hijacking and armed robbery.

“This incident came as a bit of a surprise, as we haven’t dealt with these types of cases in a while. However, officers were ready and dispatched to the scene immediately,” said de Jager.

“Due to economic stress resulting from the lockdown, people may look for various means to make money. If they have to turn to crime, they will turn to crime,” said de Jager.

Businesses moving or receiving goods, as per de Jager, need to remain watchful.

“Businesses should make sure they know exactly when stock is being delivered or when they are delivering stock in order to take precautions,” said de Jager.

He added businesses must know drop-off times and what and whom is coming into their premises.

“When confronted with firearms or any type of robbery, people should comply with what the criminals are requesting. Your life is more important than any goods,” said de Jager.

According to de Jager, you should press your panic button, if security guards are available.

“As there are less vehicles on the road, this makes it a bit easier to distinguish if you are being followed; therefore, be on guard,” said de Jager.

De Jager added if stock was stolen, businesses should have a list of exactly what was taken in order to assist SAPS in further investigations.

“If a vehicle is stolen, we would need the registration papers of the particular vehicle as soon as possible as they cannot circulate the vehicle as stolen without the proper documentation,” said de Jager.

Concerning permits provided by SAPS, de Jager said a new Government Gazette dated May 14 has been issued and residents are urged to review the new changes.
