Covid-19: Fikile Mbalula urges South Africans to shop local

Over 22 000 traffic officials have been deployed.

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula last night encouraged citizens to make use of local shops to get their groceries.

He also discouraged those making use of public transport from doing so after 9am.

The Minister stated in his briefing of the National Command Council that over 22 000 traffic officials were deployed to ensure those in the transport sector abide by the rules and regulations set out by the government.

“Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and security personnel from the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) are on patrol duty at Park Station. Our National Traffic Police are working closely with the Defence Force and SAPS in enforcing the law at the Beitbridge and Lebombo border posts,” Mbalula said.

He added that his department received reports of non-compliance with lockdown traffic regulations.

A male cyclist was arrested on the M1 South freeway near Southgate.

He had allegedly told officers he was attempting to cycle to Cape Town.

The man was detained at the Mondeor Police Station.
