Covid-19 – Bedfordview NOT identified as an epicentre for Gauteng pandemic says NICD

“We are appealing to all South Africans to heed the President's call to stay at home during the lockdown".

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) stated this afternoon that it has not identified Bedfordview as an epicentre of Covid-19 in Gauteng.

“Please note that the NICD has not identified Bedfordview as the epicentre of COVID 19,” said Sinenhlanhla Jimoh, communications manager of the National Health Laboratory Service division of the NICD.

“We are appealing to all South Africans to heed the President’s call to stay at home during the lockdown and to undertake preventative measures to limit the spread of the virus”

This comes after Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, Minister of Defence and Military Veterans stated Bedfordview is an epicentre of the virus in an interview on March 26.

“During one of our briefings, we received information that the epicentre of this pandemic in Gauteng is Sandton and Bedfordview,” she said in response to a question about hot spot areas and deployments.

“Around Bedfordview, you have an informal settlement which is in Germiston called Cyril Ramaphosa informal settlement. So we have to do everything and focus on those areas.” said the minister of defence.
