From the consumer’s point of view

The members of HCL in Bedfordview spoke openly about their experience with Black Friday.

The Households Consumers League (HCL) in Bedfordview urged consumers to spend wisely on Black Friday.

HCL chairperson Chloe Eilertsen said, “Centres become so crowded with a short supply of the specials on offer.

“You go in for a particular item and find that there is none available and end up buying something else you never intended on buying. For the consumer it is a big carrot in front of your nose,” said Eilertsen.

She said on a normal day when stock on special is finished you are allowed to take what is known as a “rain check”.

This is not applicable on Black Friday.

“When more stock arrives you can buy it at the price on special. However, with Black Friday this is not the case,” said Eilertsen.

Cairperson of HCL Chloe Eilertsen.

“Black Friday works on a first come, first served basis. Do not end up placing yourself in debt.”

Pauline Smith, HCL committee member, said people need to be weary of spending money on unnecessary items.

HCL committee member Jean Smart said South Africa is definitely picking up American trends.

“I think Black Friday is much more for the younger generation.

“At my age, we throw things away, while younger people accumulate more things,” said Jean.

HCL member Sonja Bulkin reminded consumers that those who wish to avoid shops on Black Friday have the option of shopping online.

“My daughter does all her Black Friday shopping online. It seems more controlled and you end up getting exactly what you want, instead of arriving at a shopping centre and finding everything off the shelf already,” said Sonja.

Mpumi Mahlangu from Pick n Pay Mall@Carnival and HCL member spoke about her experience during Black Friday.

Mpumi Mahlangu from Pick n Pay at Mall@Carnival said their experience on Black Friday is just like every other day.

“Consumers have a choice to go to a store where they feel most comfortable. It is not just one store who has Black Friday specials, there are many which makes the load bearable,” said Mpumi.

She said the only uncertainty Black Friday has produced was the “rain check”.

“Customers end up demanding stock at the marked-down price, which defeats the purpose of Black Friday.”

The league does agree on one thing about Black Friday and that is the amazing bargains and discounts available.

“If you get your hands on a bargain on Black Friday, go for it,” said Chloe.
