WARNING: GRAPHIC IMAGES – SPCA raids chicken abattoir

"Evidence of inhumane slaughter was observed."

Sandton SPCA, the environmental health department and Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry uncovered an illegal chicken abattoir when they raided a house in Bertrams on May 31.

Most of the chickens have suffered loss of feathers and bruising.

A total of 259 chickens were found during the raid.

SPCA inspector manager Stephen Maila described the conditions at the abattoir as ‘deplorable’.

“The chickens were cruelly confined in a filthy and inadequately lit room, which had poor ventilation and the overwhelming stench of ammonia.

“The chickens were packed in so tightly that they were barely able to move. Most of the birds had suffered severe feather loss and bruising. Evidence of inhumane slaughter was observed during investigations,” said Maila, who was accompanied by a team comprising an inspector and a field officer.

The chicken are freed by SPCA investigators.

“Our dedicated and compassionate team of inspectors worked tirelessly, under difficult, unhygienic and trying conditions, to safely secure and move the chickens to the safe haven of the Sandton SPCA.

“The chickens were seized in terms of the Animals Protection Act and criminal charges will be laid,” added Maila.
