Project founder aims to create soccer stars

The programme aims to bridge the gaps currently existing in the player's development system.

Soccer player Simphiwe Gwambi is giving back to the community through Simphiwe Sports Development (SSD).

The project aims to develop the youth through sports and life skills programmes.

“This programme recruits in order to build and produce World Cup standard sports athletes. As a former professional soccer player, I know and understand the struggles of the field. When not well guided, your career might end before it even begins,” said Simphiwe.

“We have so much talent in our community that is not noted or gets the right training and I wanted to give them the opportunity as young footballers to get the chance to play at a high level,” said Simphiwe.

The 29-year-old said he will take a holistic approach to develop players.

“We develop the person first and then the athlete. We focus on long-term development. The journey requires patience, understanding and planning. We involve the parents and all the necessary people because players need that full support,” explained Simphiwe.

The targeted age is six to 21 years old.

The programme is divided into six stages and aims to bridge the gaps in the player development system.

“We want to control, reduce and eliminate any chances of hindering a player’s development. The athletes development programme follows scientific principles and practical coaching experiences,” said Simphiwe.

SSD will be hosting trials from March 25 to 30 at Bez Valley Park.
