The foundation was founded by Mary Elbadry last year.

“It breaks my heart to see people begging for food. All I want to do is to make a difference in someone’s life,” she said.

“Starting an NGO was a calling. I prayed about starting the organisation because I suffered as a child. I grew up in Cape Town. I was an abandoned child at the age of three. My parents were not there for me. I spent a lot of time begging for food on the streets. I also moved from one house to another begging for food.

“Even though I was abandoned, I managed to complete matric and found a job. I could not further my studies as I did not have any financial support. I currently work at Kelly & Quest. When I get my salary, I buy food and cook for those who are underprivileged. I have about 40 registered homes that I provide food for.

“I provide food for homes in Bez Valley, Kensington, Troyvile and Betrams. The food I cook is not enough for the homes that I provide food for as many people need the food,” she said.

Elbadry said she also wants to build a safe haven for orphans.

“I want to take them off the streets and give them a home. I also want to offer them counselling. I want them to know that they are not alone. Most people who find themselves in a situation where they have to beg for food end up seeking alternative ways to survive. I don’t want children to go through that. Any donations from the residents will be appreciated,” she said.

Anyone willing to assist the foundation can contact Mary Elbadry on 078 150 9524 or 060 878 9555.
