#CrimeStats – Sexual Assault tops Edenvale Crime Stats with 80% increase

A 60% increase was also reported in sexual offenses overall for the area.

In the 2018/2019 financial year spanning April 1 2018 and March 2019 Edenvale SAPS precinct saw an 80% increase in the number of sexual assault cases reported.

The number increased from 5 to 9 during this time.

Contact sexual offences also increased by 150% from 2 to 5.

A 60% increase was also reported in sexual offences overall with the number of cases increasing from 15 to 24.

Assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm also increase by 60% with the number of cases reported hitting 56.

The Edenvale Police Station also featured in the top 30 stations nationally for the number of arrests made related to persons driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

During the 2018/2019 financial year, 547 people were arrested for driving drunk an increase of 205 from the previous financial year.

Other significant decreases in crime were reported in murder and attempted murder with 57.1% and 42.9% decreases respectively.

Residential burglaries decreased by 30.5% with 248 cases reported in the 2018/2019 financial year.

A 32.1% decrease was also reported in the number of commercial crimes reported in Edenvale with a total of 309 cases.
