#CrimeStats – Murder up by 400% in Bedfordview

Bedfordview featured third in the top 30 stations nationally for truck hijackings with a total of 28 reported.

The 2018/2019 SAPS crime stats have revealed a 400% increase in the number of murder cases reported in the Bedfordview precinct.

In the 2018/2019 financial year spanning April 1, 2018, and March 2019, five murders were reported. This is four more than the previous year.

Additionally, Bedfordview featured third in the top 30 stations nationally for truck hijackings with a total of 28 reported.

This number was 33% higher than the previous period where 21 cases were reported.

Sexual offenses committed in the Bedfordview area also increased by just over 60% with 21 cases reported.

The 14 cases of rape reported over the 2018/2019 financial year meant that there was a 250% increase in the crime.

Residential robberies increased by 35.7% and motor vehicle theft increased by 47.7%.

Crimes which decreased included attempted murder by 72.2% from 18 cases in 2017/2018 to 5 cases in 2018/2019.

Attempted sexual offences and contact sexual offences decreased by 66.7% and 50% respectively.

The number of arrests made for motorists driving under the influence of alcohol also decresed by 18.4% from 217 to 177.
