Hostage negotiators defuse Edenvale shooting

A man in his 50s was arrested by members of the SAPS after he opened fire on security personnel last Monday.

Edenvale SAPS spokesperson Sgt Jacob Mashile said the man started shooting at security personnel after they responded to an alarm activation at the property next door.

The incident occurred near the corner of Seventh Street and Twelfth Avenue in Edenvale.

Mashile said SAPS hostage negotiators were called in after the man locked himself in the property.

“Negotiators spoke to the man from at the front of the property, maintaining his focus, while officers entered the property at the back and arrested him,” said Mashile.

“No one was injured during the incident.”

The man will face charges of attempted murder and discharging a firearm in a residential area.

He appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on May 14 where he faced the charges.
