City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) installed the traffic lights on Boeing and Riley roads over the Easter holidays.

Residents took to Facebook to share their opinions over the newly installed traffic lights.

The concerns raised were that the traffic light is delayed by a few seconds, which has resulted in traffic issues at peak times.

Other concerns are that the road should have stayed the way it was and that traffic lights are needed on other roads in Bedfordview.

Ward 20 Clr Jill Humphreys said that although the traffic lights have received mixed reactions, mitigation was long overdue as many collisions have occurred on these roads.

“What I requested from metro was four traffic circles on each side of the bridges. The reply was that there was not enough space,” said Humphreys.

She is, however, pleased that metro has done something to alleviate the problem, although some disagree.

“The traffic lights were done over Easter weekend and they seem to have done a good job, although many residents feel it should have been traffic circles rather than robots,” said Humphreys.

Humphreys expressed appreciation for the go ahead on three traffic circles on Riley Road, which is likely to happen soon.

Request for comment was sent to CoE on April 25 at 10.55am.
