JUST IN: Woman (55) arrested in Bedfordview for possession of 2 Rhino horns

A 55-year-old woman will appear in Germiston Regional Court today (April 18) for the illegal possession of rhino horns.

“The suspect was arrested on April 16 by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation Endangered Species Unit with support from EMPD and SANParks,” said Capt Ndivhuwo Mulamu from the Hawks.

Officers found two Rhino horns were found in her vehicle.

This arrest comes just a few days after two men were arrested in the North West for being in possession of 167 rhino horns.

“The men, who were travelling in a bakkie appeared at the Brits Magistrate Court on Monday (April 15) and were denied bail,” said Mulamu.

“Clive Johan Melville (57), and Petrus Stephanus Steyn (61), both from Port Elizabeth are expected in the same court April 26,” said Mulamu.

She said the three suspects were charged for contravening Section 57 of the National Environmental Management-Biodiversity (Nemba) Act and illegal possession of rhino horns.

Mulamu said investigations into the matter are ongoing.
