Changes to be made to Second Str

"The only downside is that traffic may increase during peak hours,"

Changes are set to be made to Second Street in the hopes of improving traffic flow and improving safety along the street.

The road will be increased from two to three lanes and will see painted shoulders on either side of the street.

Ward 18 Clr Heather Hart said the improvements were proposed in response to the concerns of the community.

Fourth Avenue resident, Janice Bote and Ward 18 Clr, Heather Hart, stand along Second Street where changes are expected to be made to the street in the near Future.

The proposed changes were presented to the community during a public participation meeting on February 26.

Hart said the community largely agreed with the proposal.

“The proposal was sent back to the City of Ekurhuleni to be reviewed,” said Hart.

She believes once work starts it will take up to six weeks to be completed, current road markings and signage will be improved.

The three main issues from the community were:

• Traffic merging from Linksfield Road into Second Street.

• Crossing over Second Street at the numerous intersections along the streets.

• Speeding.

Fourth Avenue resident Janice Bote said many motorists travelling from Elma Park make use of Fourth Avenue but have trouble crossing Second Street.

Bote said she looks forward to the changes and believe they will assist motorists.

“By having two lanes it should make crossing Second Street easier.

“The only downside is that traffic may increase during peak hours,” said Hart.

Hart said one solution to curbing the traffic would be to synchronise the traffic lights from Edenvale High’s Linksfield Road entrance to Van Riebeeck Avenue.

A request for comment was sent to the City of Ekurhuleni on March 13 requesting comment by March 15 at 11am.

At the time of going to print no comment had been received.
