Donations start to trickle in for Edenvale care centre

“I will never close this hospice, I have worked too hard.”

Mamba Security and Red Bin Brigade have challenged Edenvale businesses to meet or better their donation of R10 000 to the Edenvale Care Centre Hospice.

The donation was made on October 9.

Shanon Van der Merwe, the event coordinator of Mamba, said the company has been supporting hospice for a long time.

“When the Mamba staff saw the article of Sister Leigh appealing for assistance we were all moved,” said Shanon.

“Sister Leigh and the care centre are like a family to us. So, we decided to contribute.”

Sister Leigh said the donation was appreciated and will be put to good use.

She said since the appeal for help was published in the NEWS on October 3, donations have been trickling in.

She said community members have been donating what they can afford.

Seen holding the cheque for R10 000 from Mamba Security and Red Bin Brigade are Sister Leigh, Shanon van der Merwe and Denise Tuffrey.

“I will never close this hospice. I have worked too hard,” said Leigh.

“However, in order to keep it open, I need the support of residents and businesses in Edenvale.”

Before the appeal for help Leigh had started to turn patients away because of the lack of funding.

She said when she tells doctors and social workers that she cannot accommodate more patients, they are shocked.

“I have never had this problem before,” said Sister Leigh.
