Edenvale’s iron man excels at world champs
With an overall race time of 4:20:35 Whelan secured 33rd position out of 321 male athletes in the 30-34 age group.
Edenvale resident Darryn Whelan competed at the 70.3 Half Ironman World Championships in Port Elizabeth where he placed 33rd in his age group.
The competition, held on September 2, consisted of a 1.9km swim, 90km cycle and a 21.1km run.
The world championships saw the best professional and amateur triathletes from all over the world line up to compete against each other.

The 31-year-old chiropractor qualified for the 30-34 age group at the 70.3 Half Ironman held in East London earlier this year.
Whelan showed his skills in the water and completed the swim in a time of 26:43.
He went on to complete the cycle and run in times of 2:24:33 and 1:23:28 respectively.
With an overall race time of 4:20:35, Whelan secured 33rd position out of 321 male athletes in the 30-34 age group.
He had bettered his qualifying time by 29 minutes.

Following his success at the championships, Whelan went on to secure a second position in his age group at the Trinity Sports Standard Distance Triathlon.
The triathlon included a 1.5km swim, 40km cycle and 10km run.
