The case against two DA ward councillors and community members accused of assaulting Edenvale police officers was postponed to September 6.

Ward 17 Clr Simon Lapping, Ward 104 Clr Tracy Lourenco as well as Kim Smith and Samantha Nieuwoudt were charged with two counts of assault. The case was heard at the Edenvale Magistrate’s Court today.

The magistrate presiding over the matter postponed the case to allow the state to investigate the matter further.
Community members and members of the DA attended the court hearing today to support the accused.

On August 10 the councillors, Smith and Nieuwoudt allegedly assaulted police officers. The four alleged that they were assaulted by police officers at the Edenvale Police Station.
“Lourenco was punched, kicked and stomped on. A door was slammed on Lapping,” said DA deputy chief whip and MP Mike Waters.
The four also reported the matter to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.
