Jeppe Girls have been crocheting their hearts out for the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela.

The 67 Blankets this year is planning to attempt the 27km Scarf World Record.
On June 20 the girls displayed their “wool cakes” in front of the school. These will be contributed to the Guinness World Record attempt for the longest crocheted scarf of 27km.
The target was 3 000 and at the time of display, 2 500 had been reached.

The scarves were sewn into wool cakes of 10 scarves each.
“To date, we have in excess of 2 000 scarves which have been made by the girls and the Jeppe community.
“The girls and families have been crocheting non-stop to reach our target,” said Jeppe Girls public relations co-ordinator Carole Heming.
The founder of 67 Blankets, Carolyn Steyn, was present to see how far the girls have come and personally thank them for the contribution.
“The girls have been so dedicated to 67 Blankets and every year they never disappoint. They go the extra mile and just keep on supporting 67 Blankets,” said Steyn.
67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day was founded three years ago by Steyn in response to Zelda la Grange’s challenge to knit 67 blankets for Nelson Mandela Day.
“When I started I never thought the project would grow to this level. Every year we grow and more people join us and crochet for a purpose,” said Steyn.
The NPO has grown from 67 blankets to 670 blankets to a world-record-breaking 27 000 blankets all donated to those in need.
In the process, 67 Blankets claimed the Guinness World Record for the Largest Crochet Blanket in the World in 2015.
This year’s attempt is for the longest crocheted scarf of 27km.
“The scarf represents the years Madiba spent in prison and we felt it would be fitting for his centenary year,” said Steyn.
The record attempt will take place at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal, on July 29.
67 Blankets has grown into an international movement, with KnitWits in many countries donating blankets in the name of Madiba.
