According to DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi, the exercise was held to enhance the quality of life-saving techniques in water.

He said 70 fire fighters from across the City of Ekurhuleni volunteered to participate in the life-saving programme.

This was in preparation for changing weather patterns, as flooding and drowning are year-long problems.

Ntladi said the team is under the guidance of fire and swimming instructor Gerald Moswathupa.

He said this will enable the fire fighters to do swift water rescues.
