Group of men terrorises taxi commuters

Sebenza SAPS has urged commuters to be on the lookout for a white Toyota Quantum.

Sebenza SAPS appealed to the community to help find a group of men and a woman operating in a white Toyota Quantum around the Sebenza and Croydon areas.

Sebenza SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Sharon Tsotsotso said five incidents were reported at the Sebenza Police Station.

“The taxi targets commuters traveling from Sebenza or Croydon areas to Johannesburg and Tembisa. The victims said the taxi has a driver and a woman in front and six men at the back,” said Tsotsotso.

“Some of the men are armed with guns and knives. The moment you board the taxi, they take your belongings and demand your bank card. One of the victims was taken to an ATM to withdraw money. Once her daily limit was reached, they waited until 12am and demanded she withdraws more money for them,” said Tsotsotso.

Tsotsotso said the victims were dropped off at various locations after being robbed.

“One of the victims was dropped off in Johannesburg and another one was dropped off in Vosloorus,” she said.

She urged the community to be vigilant and take registration numbers before boarding taxis.

“The taxi does not have a registration number at the back and at this point, it is not known whether there is a registration number on the front.

“Before you get into the taxi, take a photo of the registration or memorise and send it to a family member or a friend immediately,” said Tsotsotso.
