More motorists come forward with questions about Terrace Road speed camera

"Terrace Road is renowned for speeding, anything to slow people down has definite value."

Earlier this month two businessmen spoke to the NEWS and questioned the accuracy of the cameras at the intersection of Terrace and Fountain roads.

Edenglen resident Marcelle Pillay and two other community members have raised concerns over the irregular behaviour of the traffic cameras at the Terrace and Fountain roads intersection.

The NEWS asked community members on social media to get in touch and share their concerns.

Several community members who had similar concerns to those of the businessmen came forward and spoke to the NEWS.

Edenglen resident Marcelle Pillay said while travelling home from work recently she noticed the camera flashing irregularly.

“I had stopped at the Terrace Road intersection and while I waited for the traffic light to change the camera flashed,” said Pillay.

Besides another car parked alongside her Pillay said there were no other cars at the intersection.

She saw the camera flash just before the traffic light changing to red. Pillay believes the camera flashes whenever the traffic light changes regardless if there are cars at the intersection or not.

Eastleigh resident Nicola van Den Bergh, who resides near the intersection, said up until August 21 she saw the camera flashing quite regularly.

She said she hasn’t seen it flash since that night.

“It was terrible. When I was awake in the early hours of the morning I would sit and watch the camera flash.”

Like Pillay, Van Den Bergh said the camera was flashing regardless if there was a car moving through the intersection or not.

“I’m no electrician but something must be wrong or something must be triggering the camera,” said Van Den Bergh.

Cornel de Bruin, who travels to and from work on Terrace Road, said she too noticed the inconsistency with the camera.

She said on August 17 she noticed the camera flashing even though there was no movement in the intersection.

“I thought to myself there’s nothing moving, what is going on,” said De Bruin.

Pillay said although the cameras at the intersection may be faulty, it was good that they were erected.

“Terrace Road is renowned for speeding. Anything to slow people down has definite value,” said Pillay.

“However, if the camera is faulty and innocent people receive fines, where will the burden of truth lie?”

De Bruin said she hopes to see a response from the municipality and see what they will do to address the matter.

A request for comment was sent to the spokesperson of the EMPD, Lt Col Wilfred Kgasago, asking whether the camera was faulty.

The NEWS phoned Kgasago who said that he had received the enquiry and was following up on it.

Deadline for comment was August 28 at 9am. At the time of going to print no comment had been received.

This was the second time the NEWS requested comment on the speed camera from EMPD.
