'Conquering cancer one step at a time' was the theme of the walk

The Shuffling Walking Team hosted a family fun walk for cancer awareness on July 30, at St Benedict’s.

Pink was the colour of the day as supporters came dressed up in tutus and creative outfits in the hope of scooping the Best Dressed award.

“The first walk was attended by 200 walkers and has grown to 2000 walkers in 2017. This is the sixth year of hosting the walk,” said da Silva.

“The purpose of the walk is to create awareness in the community as well as to raise funds for our chosen charities because so many of our own family and friends have been touched by this dreaded disease,” she further explained.

Chosen beneficiaries for 2017 are The Breast Health Foundation, The Sunflower Fund, Hospice East Rand and Stepping Stones Hospice Alberton.

The MC for the morning was 5fm’s Nicole da Silva.

Former Miss SA Vanessa Carreira-Coutroulis was the special guest who cut the start ribbon.

A few words were also said by Dr Carol Anne Benn of the Breast Health Foundation before the start of our race.

“We would like to say a very big thank you to St. Benedict’s for allowing us the use of their premises,” added da Silva.

Da Silva also thanked CMS security for keeping all the walkers safe as well as The Portuguese Amigos – Harley Davidson bikers who led the start of the walk.

“Most importantly we would like to say thank you to all our sponsors and walkers – without them this would not have been possible. This walk has become a calendar event in Bedfordview,” she added.

Da Silva extended a heartfelt thank you to the new Shuffling Walking Team committee members.
