A green Mandela Day for Horwood’s Farm

Pedder encourages community members and local garden services to continue in the spirit of Madiba and spend 67 minutes helping out at Horwood's Farm on July 20 and 21.

Edenvale resident, Margy Pedder, has come up with a project to give community members another opportunity to help in celebration of Mandela Day.

Pedder has encouraged community members and local garden services to continue in the spirit of Madiba and spend 67 minutes helping out at Horwood’s Farm on July 20 and 21.

By having this project Pedder hopes residents will put some love and work into the park.

She said willing residents can give up their garden service time slots and urge their garden service to help out or get involved themselves at the park.

Any available garden services are also more than welcome to get involved.

Pedder said by asking the garden services to get involved she hopes skilled and experienced people with transport will get on board with the project.

As a member of Friends of Horwood’s Farm, Pedder is already involved in maintaining the park.

The group itself has been operating in Horwood’s Farm for numerous years.

She explained that the group was started by Sharon Lendrum-Fritelli, who is currently on a sabbatical and has the objective of keeping the park neat and well maintained.

Environmental awareness is something which has always existed in Pedder’s life.

She got involved in the group through her passion for gardening and her love for nature.

She explained that whenever she moved to a new house or property, the first thing she would focus on was the garden.

Over the years she would encourage others to plant plants whenever they could.

After joining Friend’s of Horwoods Farm, Pedder could share her passion with others.

“Every month we meet up and decide on an area in the park which needs attention,” said Pedder.

She believes Horwood’s Farm is one of the cleaner and safer parks in the Edenvale area.

When she moved to Edenvale in the 90’s she remembered the park being full of residents.

“The parking lots were filled – it was so magnificent and stunning. Maintenance and cleanliness play a large role in whether a park is used,” explained Pedder.

She said a lot of people do still make use of the park.

Margy urged anyone wanting to get involved in the Mandela project to take their own brooms, spades, garden forks and a positive attitude.

Attention will be focussed on the more wooded area at the bottom of the park near Malagueta.

To assist with the off-cuts Pedder is trying to organise skips from the municipality.

Pedder said so far she had about 30 people interested in supporting the initiative.

She added that other businesses are also welcome to get involved in the initiative.
