Bright future ahead for budding motorsport champ

Aside from his school work, the talented 15-year-old has his hands full racing, almost every weekend.

Young Bedfordview star Cameron O’Connor continues to blaze a trail in his quest for honours in this year’s local motorsport season.

Aside from his school work, the talented 15-year-old has his hands full racing, almost every weekend. He leads the Northern Region’s Senior Max Karting Championship and is currently third in the National Senior Max Karting Championship, with just three points separating the first three places in the log.

O’Connor is also competing in the Investchem F1600 national championship.

At Zwartkops, in the latest round of the title chase, on Youth Day, he recovered from an off track excursion due to faulty brakes and finished fifth in race one.

He then led heat two for a number of laps before being overtaken by the as yet unbeaten series leader, Julian van der Watt. That first win in the category is proving elusive and fourth place overall for the day at the Pretoria West venue belied an excellent day’s work by the ever improving youngster.

After just four rounds in his fledgling single seater career, he lies fourth in the F1600 championship, locked in a four-way tussle for the runner up spot.

With the race preparation and mentorship of Brian Kruger and the support of his parents, Gavin and Samantha, and younger brother, Riley, O’Connor is determined to make his presence felt on the local motorsport scene and clinch silverware in 2017 and beyond, as a precursor to bigger things in the future.
