Awareness march for Edenvale youth to be held

"The youth desk aims to help everyone, not only the youth."

To highlight the dangers facing the Edenvale youth, a march will be held through Edenvale on Youth Day.

The march is being organised by the Edenvale Youth Desk and the Edenvale SAPS Social Crime Prevention Unit.

Chairperson of the Edenvale Youth Desk Megan Ricciardi said the march aims to encourage the youth not to fall victim to drugs. It also aims to inform youngsters about bullying and abuse.

She explained that teenagers are most-affected by these three dangers.

Megan said she hopes the march will create awareness.

The march will begin at the Edenvale Community Centre at 10am on June 16.

Interested individuals can start arriving at 9.30am.

Sergeant Jacob Mashile, head of the Edenvale SAPS Social Crime Prevention Unit, said the march will proceed up Second Street, down Van Riebeeck Avenue, down Fourth Street, along Voortrekker Avenue and back up Second Street towards the community centre.

Meagan told the NEWS her involvement in the youth desk stemmed from her involvement in the Edenvale Community Police Forum.

“I saw this active young person and decided to get her involved in the youth desk,” said Mashile.

Since the youth desk was established earlier this year, this will be its third event.

Earlier this year the youth desk took part in the Superhero Fun Run, hosted by the Edenvale City Improvement District, and an awareness campaign at the Stoneridge Shopping Centre.

“The youth desk aims to help everyone, not only the youth,” said Meagan.

Mashile said the youth desk will play an important role in Edenvale.

He said it will raise important issues.

“The youth desk will act as a middle man between the youth and the SAPS. Through them the SAPS will have access to the youth,” said Mashile.

“So far the youth of Edenvale are supporting the youth desk, there has not been any negative response,” said Mashile.

To get involved in the youth desk, phone Meagan on 084 0580 518 or Mashile on 082 7587 300.

Alternatively, the youth desk can be contacted through its Facebook page Edenvale SAPS and CPF Youth Crime Prevention Forum.
