New scam doing the rounds

"In one of the cases the 'officer' demanded money to recover a stolen car."

The Edenvale SAPS urges community members to be aware of con artists pretending to be police officers.

Captain Jean Olckers, spokesperson of the Edenvale SAPS, said community members have received phone call from alleged police officers demanding money.

Two of these incidents were reported to the Edenvale SAPS and cases were opened.

“In one of the cases the ‘officer’ demanded money to recover a stolen car. In the second case, the complainant was told to pay the money to avoid arrest,” said Olckers.

In both cases the complainants did not fall for the scam and contacted the Edenvale SAPS to confirm the alleged identities of the officers.

Olckers said in both cases the identities were found to be false.

“We want to urge complainants not to fall for these scams and to always confirm the identities of officers with our police station first, as no police officer will demand cash in exchange to do their work,”said Olckers.
