Police arrest four for robbery

Four men were due to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on April 7 after they were arrested in connected with an attempted Daveyton bank robbery.

Maj-Gen Poobalan Subbiah, the Ekurhuleni Central Cluster commander, said the incident took place on April 1 at about 8.30am.

“Two unknown males entered the Absa bank at Daveyton Mall, armed with a pistol,” said Subbiah.

“They approached the security guard who was carrying the money to the ATM machines and ordered him to drop the money on the floor.

“They took the money and ran outside to the parking lot and climbed into a white Audi with the false registration plates.”

Subbiah said the police followed up on information that the security guard was possibly involved in the incident.

The police traced the man to the Eastern Cape, where he confessed to his involvement.

Information then led the police to Daveyton and Boksburg, where three other people were arrested.

Subbiah said more arrests are imminent.

The men will be charged with conspiracy to comment an armed robbery, robbery and defeating the ends of justice.
