A helping hand for child welfare

"We had nothing in the first aid box before we were reimbursed with supplies,"

Gauteng 911 recently lent a helping hand to Child Welfare SA – Edenvale

The emergency response company donated supplies for the society’s first aid box.

Jenny Kennedy, the office administrator at the organisation, said the supplies were greatly needed.

Ona Ndala, regional director of Gauteng 911, said he decided to lend a hand after he heard about the welfare’s needs.

“We had nothing in the first aid box before we were provided with supplies,” said Kennedy.

Ndala, who is passionate about his job, said he has been involved with Gauteng 911 for the past three years.

He said it just came naturally to him to want to help other people.

Carlé Osmers, a fellow staff member of Ndala, said having a passion for others is vital.

The pair emphasised that community members should exercise caution and vigilance these holidays.

They encouraged families to invest in first aid boxes, which should remain close at hand.

According to Osmers, some of the most important items to have in a first aid box are:

  •  Gloves.
  •  CPR mouthpiece.
  •  Splints.
  •  Bandages.
  •  Crepe tape.
  •  Gauze,
  •  Glyco gel and bandages.

She said when calling an ambulance, callers must follow a certain procedure.

Osmers said when a call is made to emergency personnel, the caller must identify himself and provide a contact number.

Once this has been done callers need to describe the emergency situation as best they can and provide information on the location of the emergency.

She said it is important for the caller to take their own safety into account before approaching an emergency scene.

If it is safe to do so, the caller must approach the scene and describe the injuries they see.

Once all of the above has been told to the emergency services, it is important t remain at the location and be on the lookout for emergency services.

“It is important that the caller never hangs up before the emergency services do,” said Osmers.
