Pageant winner is grateful for the experience

"It was quite surreal to stand at the finals and hear my name called out. I had only participated in the pageant to give to those who needed it,"

Winner of the 2017 Miss Teen Social Entrepreneur South Africa, Kate Metzer has a passion for helping those in need and who are less fortunate than herself.

The 14 year old Holy Rosary High School learner said she feels a sense of purpose when she is able to help someone in need.

Kate said winning Miss Teen SESA came as a surprise to her as it was the first pageant she had ever entered and she really was not expecting to win it.

Kate said she decided to get involved in the pageant when the founder of Miss Teen SESA, Mrs Tarryn Ogle, gave a talk about the pageant at Holy Rosary.

She said what appealed to her the most when she heard about the pageant was the fact that it helped those in need through the Dignity Dreams charity.

“It was quite surreal to stand at the finals and hear my name being called out. I had only participated in the pageant to give to those who were in need,” said Kate.

“I am so proud of her. It is a wonderful achievement,” said Ms Lisa Metzer, Kate’s mother.

She said prior to the event, her daughter had no pageantry or modelling experience.

Lisa said Kate had gone into the pageant never expecting to win.

“All the hard work and creating of awareness for Dignity Dreams paid off,” said Lisa.

Kate said during the pageant she was able to raise R15 000 for Dignity Dreams, a charity that provides female sanitation kits to underprivileged learners.

According to Kate, one of the most challenging aspects about the competition was the fact that she had to balance her school work, personal life and the pageant.

She said participating in the pageant was a good experience.

“I got to speak to other contestants and make friends for life,” said Kate.

Miss Teen SESA was not Kate’s first time giving back to those in need. She is involved in community service through the school and is a member of Holy Rosary School’s outreach programme.

“I want to keep helping those in need. I hope to still help Miss Teen SESA,” said Kate.

Lisa said Kte hopes to still be part of the Miss Teen SESA and assist the competitors who will be taking part in the next pageant.
