This comes after an army tanker broke down on the carriageway closing off three lanes.

The freeway is affected in both directions with the South backed up all the way from the Buccleuch Interchange while the North is reportedly backed up from Geldenhuys Interchange.

The recovery of the tanker, a Rooikat, is underway.

*The Rooikat is a South African armoured reconnaissance vehicle equipped with a stabilised 76mm high velocity gun for organic anti-tank and fire support purposes.
