Car jamming a reality

"When you approach your destination, turn down the volume on your radio and do not speak on the phone."

The increase in incidents of theft out of motor vehicle is a concern for police in the area.

Spokesperson for the Bedfordview SAPS, Captain André de Jager, said residents and motorists should be responsible when parking their cars in public places.

“When locking your car, check to make sure it has locked. Don’t press your remote control and walk away. No matter how late you may be, that five seconds is worth it,” said Cpt De Jager.

He said residents should keep valuables locked in the boot at all times.

“Be aware of your surroundings at all times,” said Cpt De Jager.

He said as far as smash and grab incidents are concerned, motorists should avoid hotspots.

“Women are mostly targeted because they tend to leave their handbags on the front seat,” said Cpt De Jager.

He said the hotspots include the corner of Van Der Linde and Boeing roads.

Cpt De Jager said members of the public should be cautious when using these roads.

“Don’t give criminals an opportunity to smash and grab. When you approach your destination, turn down the volume on your radio and do not speak on the phone. People may innocently stand at intersections, but be aware because they can be used by syndicates to get information on people in the area, as well as their movements,” said Cpt De Jager.

He also urged residents to make sure they have good tracking device systems as well as anti-hijack systems in their cars.
