‘Bunny Hop is not animal dump-site’ – Smit

She urged people to refrain from abandoning their animals at the centre.

The Bunny Hop Haven has expressed concern over the number of animals that are abandoned at the shelter.

This comes after unwanted animals were dropped off at the shelter over the last week.

Ms Kelly Smit said people have dropped off a box full of bunnies as well as cats.

“Last Sunday a woman drove in and her son came out of the vehicle and dropped off a carrier with a cat inside. We inspected the cat and found that it was not picked up elsewhere, but instead, it was a pet living in a home. This is upsetting to say the least. A cat does not belong in the Bunny Hop,” said Ms Smit.

She urged people to refrain from abandoning their animals at the centre.

“We are not a dumping site for animals that people do not want anymore. We have arrived at Bunny Hop and found a few cardboard boxes with baby bunnies inside. No note left, no message nor phone call to say they had been left there. We are very disturbed at the fact that people can be so cruel. There are places where you can take stray animals. If you know you cannot look after an animal when it is older, please just do not get one,” she said.

Ms Smit said herself and Ms Andrea Berzen, the founder and manager of the shelter, are working around the clock to re-home the cat that was abandoned last weekend.

She said for the time being, the cat is being taken care of by Dr Claire Bosman, who is helping with the re-homing process.

The Bunny Hop is a rescue shelter for farm animals.

The shelter is home to over 200 animals rescued from across Joburg.

Ms Smit previously told the NEWS that plans are in place to relocate the shelter.

“We were badly hit by the recent storms and flash floods. Although all our babies are fine, we feel there is a need to move them to a safer place as our current location is a wetland,” said Ms Smit.

She urged residents to follow the shelter on social media.
