The Department of Labour recently announced a new minimum wage for South Africa’s domestic workers.

The Department of Labour recently announced a new minimum wage for South Africa’s domestic workers.

The new wage became effective from December 1, 2016.

According to the department, domestic workers include housekeepers, gardeners, nannies, and domestic drivers, among others.

The following rates have been allocated for Area A. Area A refers to large metropolitan municipalities and built up areas and suburbs.

Minimum wages for domestic workers who work more than 27 ordinary hours per week:

  •  Hourly rate for Area A will be R12.42.
  •  Weekly rate for Area A will be R559.09.
  •  Monthly rate for Area A will be R2422.54.

Minimum wages for domestic workers who work less than 27 ordinary hours per week:

  •  Hourly rate for Area A will be R14.54.
  •  Weekly rate for Area A will be R392.58.
  •  Monthly rate for Area A will be R1701.06.
