Bunny haven wrecked after storm

The centre was on the brink of closing down if no alternative accormmodation is found for the animals.

The Bunny Hop Haven and Chicken Run is facing a bleak future following last week’s heavy rains and flash floods.

Residents urged to hop along and support Bunny Haven
The shelter houses over 200 animals, mostly bunnies.
Marketing manager Ms Kelly Smit said the centre was on the brink of closing down if no alternative accormmodation is found for the animals.

“We were badly hit by the storm. Although all our babies are fine, we feel there is a need to move them to a safer place as our current location is a wetland,” said Ms Smit.

She said together with the founder of the shelter, Ms Andrea Berzen, they have earmarked municipal land in Bedfordview that can accommodate the shelter.
“After meeting up with the relevant officials from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM), we would like to start rolling out the plans that we have. The current location means that we cannot use concrete, but once we have relocated we can be able to set up a state of the art facility,” said Ms Smit.

The 21-year-old said in the meantime, residents and businesses wanting to help the shelter can donate wooden cut offs.
“We also need heavy duty plastic sheeting and old dog kernels which help a great deal when the rain pours,” said Ms Smit.
She appealed to parents to take their children to visit the shelter to interact with the animals.

“The only way we generate funds is when people visit us. All that money we make goes towards buying vegetables for the animals, as well as vet bills,” said Ms Smit.
All the animals in the care of the Bunny Hop Haven are rescued from around Johannesburg.

Ms Smit said residents wanting to make donations can do so through the shelter’s bank account.
