Residents celebrate as storm tears into super billboard

Residents took to social media to express their joy over the incident.

Bedfordview residents have welcomed the tearing apart of the notorious super billboard at Gillooly’s Farm this afternoon.
The 90m mega-structure made headlines in recent months when residents called for its removal even before construction could be completed.

Trees to make way for super billboard

Following heavy rains this afternoon, the signs on the board were torn apart with some pieces falling on the neighbouring Boeing Road West.
Residents took to social media to express their joy over the incident.
Ward 20 councillor, Clr Jill Humphreys, was no exception.

“Wonderful, wonderful rain in so many ways,” posted Clr Humphreys.

Another resident echoed Clr Humphreys’ sentiments.
“Mother nature [is] making her feelings about this monstrosity known,” said the resident.

Super billboard an eyesore for locals

In July, Mr Themba Gadebe, the spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM), said the billboard was approved in June 2015 by the municipality’s City Planning Department.

He said it was guided by the terms of the provisions of the Ekurhuleni Police Services Bylaw (2003) Chapter IV.
“Therefore the correct processes were followed upon approving the structure at Gillooly’s,” said Mr Gadebe.

The heavy rains and hail also caused damage in areas in Edenvale. Seen here are photos taken along High Road, Eastleigh where the storm caused damage to the roof of this building. Photos provided by Donald van Aswegen.
