Inyoni Creek resident celebrates her 90th birthday

Ms Moyra Levenson, a resident of Inyoni Creek retirement village not only celebrated her 65th wedding anniversary on July 14, but also her 90th birthday on August 20.

Mrs Moyra Levenson, a resident of Inyoni Creek retirement village, not only celebrated her 65th wedding anniversary on July 14, but also her 90th birthday on August 20.

When she woke up on the morning of her birthday, she was whisked away by her grandson on some vague excursion. She ended up at a nearby social club packed with family and friends who were waiting patiently to surprise her.

Mrs Levenson and her husband Mr Albert Levenson moved to Rand Aid six years ago and they love the village. “Everyone is so friendly. People wave at each other and neighbours care about neighbours,” said Mrs Levenson.

They lived in a house they had built on the Glendower Golf Estate for many years before that, and son Gavin, a professional golfer, still has strong links to the club.

Mr Levenson established Bert Levenson Insurance Brokers and all their children, Gavin, Digby, Linda and Debra, have been involved with the business.

All four were also born at the same hospital as their mother, the Queen Vic.

“We are blessed to have all our family members close by and are thankful for the love and support they show us,” said Mrs Levenson. The Levensons have 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The couple met when they both worked for the same insurance company, but when their children were born, Mrs Levenson decided to devote her time to raising them.

She is a keen knitter who still knits squares to be sewn into blankets for the needy. She comes from a family of eight, and both she and her husband had a grandparent who reached the grand age of 100.

About to turn 90 himself, Mr Levenson said that his wife, who is older by a few months, was “a cradle snatcher”. His naughty sense of humour is legendary but he has another side, that of being a writer and poet. He has published a novel, ‘There is a Land’, and two volumes of poetry that speak of great insight and introspection.
