Bowls tournament takes place

"The game involves tactics and strategy."

The International Quadrangular tournament, which was hosted by the Edenvale Bowling Club, began on Thursday, July 28.

The international tournament saw four teams taking part. They were South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and an invitational team, the South African Junior team.

The tournament lasted for three days and concluded on July 30.

“It is awesome that the event is here. We have the facilities here in Edenvale. It is a great opportunity not only for the club but for Edenvale as well,” said the Edenvale Bowling Club President, Mrs Gerald May.

A spectator and previous lawn bowls player, Mr Nico Oelofse said that he had come to watch his son Thinus Oelofse play at the event.

Nico told the NEWS that his son is part of the national junior team that will be partaking in the lawn bowls world championship taking place in New Zealand in December this year.

Nico said that before the family moved to Benoni, Thinus was a member of the Edenvale Bowling Club.

Bedfordview resident Ms Colleen Piketh also took part. Like Thinus, she is a national lawn bowls player and will represent South Africa in New Zealand.

“Bowls is a good game. You can play it whenever you want to,” said Nico. He said the game involves tactics and strategy.
