Olympics fever at Crawford schools
In celebration of its former pupils who will take part in this year's Olympics, Crawford Schools has been carrying an Olympic torch from one campus to the next.
In celebration of its former pupils who will take part in this year’s Olympic Games, Crawford Schools has been carrying an Olympic torch from one campus to the next.
The initiative was launched on July 19 at Crawford La Lucia.
The reason for this event is to celebrate that five members of the South African 2016 Olympic team are former Crawford pupils.
Cameron van der Burgh, Jarred Crous, Michael Meyer, Michelle Weber and Dylan Bosch will be swimming in Rio and were all former Crawford pupils. The torch was brought up by a Crawford North Coast student to Crawford Italia. All the pupils dressed up in the five colours of the Olympic rings on Monday, July 25.
They made five circles to welcome the torch which had a real flame as well as an LED option. There was much excitement, despite the cold and drizzly weather. An assembly all about the Crawford Olympians was held. All classes had the opportunity to see the torch up close and later that day it continued its journey to the next Crawford School, Sandton College.
The Italia pupils attached messages of good luck to balloons in the Olympic colours and they released some homing pigeons. The torch was flown in a branded helicopter, with Jack Stephens being the lucky pupil to take the trip as he is the oldest pupil at Crawford Italia. Unfortunately the weather prevented the helicopter from flying low over the school for all to see. Jack proudly handed the torch to Michael Meyer’s mother at the Sandton campus, welcomed by the principal, Mrs Morag Rees and all the pupils there. It will end its journey at Crawford Pretoria on the day of the 2016 Olympics opening ceremony in Rio on August 5.
